Most of the villages on the east coast of Bintan are fishing communities. Coming very often from all over Indonesia, some have settled here. These fishermen are an integral part of the ocean's ecosystem, and are key elements for the future of the area. Without their support or their understanding, nothing can happen. They have an intimate knowledge of the area.
They use Nikoi in many ways. Most of the time they use the island as an anchorage to shelter from the weather and have been extremely respectful to the island. Some of them still put a few traps and a couple of nets here and there. A respectful relationship with the local fishing communities is not only vital for the well being of the reef, but can also prove to be an example for the rest of Bintan's coast.
