in 2011 a net caught the reef, completely encircling the island. in 2013 the net as you see here as started to decay, but leaves a sour note on that special place
This species of hard coral, Acropora, grows fast close to the surface . A net washed over the reef a couple of years ago. The net has started to break down with mixed result. But an extraordinary event happened. You have here the net been incorporated and built upon by the coral colonies. The strategy of building with rather than fight the intrusion proved a succesful survival technics. Some decided to fight and lost.
