During the last few days, two turtles have been coming to the island but they haven't been laying any eggs. This season the sand has shifted more drastically than usual. The turtles are probably checking the different spots where they could lay their eggs (shade, temperature and so on...)
In Tajung Pinang the traditional market is floodiing with turtle eggs: 4000 rupia for a single egg.
"People believe it is the local viagra" Jordan tells me and the eggs fetch better prices than the turtle themselves which are sold at around 5 or 6 US dollar each. Although the medias are increasingly covering turtle facts and are trying to ban the selling and collecting of the eggs, the reality is that for the locals who have low income and are able to sell at such prices, the lure of some good money is hard to pass.
At least on the island we do not have to worry about poachers. And as Yogi said, we can do our small part here, otherwise we would become depressed.
One small step at a time, regardless of the enormity of the environmental challenges the world is facing...
